The Society of Automotive Engineers, SAE, is a global association of more than 128,000 engineers and related technical experts in the aerospace, automotive and commercial-vehicle industries. SAE supports the development of consensus standards for these industries and provides engineers from around the world with the documentation of these standards to enable safe, clean, and accessible mobility solutions. Since the early 1900’s, standards development has been a vital part of SAE’s service to these industries and to humanity.
In 2000, a specification covering the requirements for electrodeposited chromium plating was issued and named AMS-QQ-C-320. In 2007, this specification was cancelled and superseded by AMS 2460 because equivalent technical requirements were provided and to permit continued use for certain parts.
AMS2460 is a standard specification by SAE Aerospace Material Specifications (AMS) that defines the requirements for electrodeposited chromium plating, commonly used in aerospace, automotive, and commercial vehicles. It specifies the information that needs to be provided in purchase orders such as class of plating, plating thickness, plating coverage, and more.
The specification AMS2460 is broken down into two classes; Class 1: Corrosion Protective Plating; Class 2: Engineering Plating.
Class 1 plating, also known as “decorative chrome” or “show chrome,” features a very thin outer layer of chromium over the combined plated nickel and/or copper. Generally, the thicker the nickel layer, the better the corrosion resistance. Typically, Class 1 is used for corrosion resistance, as its name suggests, and for its appearance.
Class 1 has two appearance types; Type I: Bright Finish; Type II: Satin Finish.
Class 2 plating, also known as “engineering chromium,” “industrial chromium,” or “hard chromium” is typically used for wear resistance, abrasion resistance, improved frictional properties, and corrosion barrier protection. The chromium layer for Class 2 can be over 1500 times thicker than the requirement in Class 1.
